Bordeaux is unquestionably the world’s most prestigious wine growing region. With over 280,000 acres under vine, 57 appellations and 9,000 wine producing chateaux, Bordeaux is the second largest growing region in the world ( Languedoc, also in France is the largest). The region’s well drained, limestone-clay soils and temperate maritime climate create the ideal terroir for producing red wines of extraordinary character.
With so many sub regions, the simplest and potentially most meaningful point of distinction within Bordeaux is its division between “right bank” and “left bank”. The region is bisected by the Gironde and Garonne Rivers. The area west of the rivers is known as the "left bank" and is dominated by larger châteaux producing Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. To the east lies the “right bank” where smaller châteaux produce predominantly Merlot-based wines. The châteaux of Adams French Vineyards are located on Bordeaux’s right bank in the appellations of Saint Emilion, Lalande de Pomerol and Premières Côtes de Bordeaux.
